Patrice Matamoros Named Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the Year

Matamoros recognized for leadership during 2013 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon

PITTSBURGH  – Patrice Matamoros, CEO of Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc., will receive the 2013 Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the Year award at the 78th Dapper Dan Dinner & Sports Auction on Thursday, February 6, 2014. Dapper Dan Charities will recognize Matamoros’ leadership in addressing increased security concerns at the 2013 DICK’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon after the Boston Marathon bombing.
The largest and most prestigious sports banquet in the region, the annual Dapper Dan Dinner has showcased Pittsburgh greats since 1939. Past awardees of the Dapper Dan Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year include Andrew McCutchen, Sidney Crosby, Mario Lemieux, Willie Stargell, Roberto Clemente, Lauryn Williams and Taylor Schram.





In light of the tragic events in Boston on Monday, April 15, 2013, Matamoros revamped and strengthened the security framework for the Sunday, May 5 race in response to heightened security concerns.The organization hired an additional 200 police and security forces for race day, while also fortifying security protocols for runners and spectators.

Matamoros helped relaunch the Pittsburgh Marathon in 2009 after a 5-year hiatus. She then grew the Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc. from a new nonprofit to organization that now supports a staff with 10 full-time staff members, 3,500 volunteers and 30,000+ runners. The organization also offers race events throughout the year with the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon as its flagship event. In addition to races, Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc. created the Steel City Road Runners, a running club boasting over 700 members, and spearheads the Kids of STEEL program, engaging 80 schools throughout the region in a youth fitness program.
